05 Aug How Long Does It Take for a Driving Licence to Arrive in the UK?
You’ve passed your driving test – congratulations! But now comes the big question: how long does it take for your driving licence to arrive? At SkillShift Driving School, we get asked this a lot by newly qualified drivers eager to hit the road with their full licence in hand.
Standard Delivery Times
Once you’ve passed your practical driving test, the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) will automatically begin processing your full UK driving licence—assuming your provisional licence was handed over to the examiner. Typically, you can expect your new photocard driving licence to arrive within 7 to 10 working days.
If you haven’t received it after three weeks, it’s recommended to contact the DVLA to check for any delays or issues with your application.
What Can Cause Delays?
Several factors can influence delivery time:
- Incomplete or incorrect personal information
- Postal disruptions or holidays
- Errors in your provisional licence data
- Manual reviews by DVLA for medical or legal reasons
To speed up the process, always ensure your details are accurate and up to date when applying.
